New School In IRMA
On Tuesday, March 21, 2017, the Alberta Government announced 26 school projects as part of Budget 2017. Nine of these school projects were replacement schools. A replacement school involves the building of an entirely new school building and the demolition of the existing school building once complete.
Buffalo Trail Public Schools is very excited to be informed that Irma School was identified as a replacement project in the school infrastructure announcement.
Irma School is the Board of Trustees #1 Capital Priority. The Board has worked hard to promote the replacement of the Irma School with their local MLA and the Ministers of both Education and Infrastructure.
As a part of that promotion, the Board has worked alongside the community of Irma. Discussions have been taking place for over a year with the community on enhancements to the government approved school building that will make the Irma School an even more community user friendly facility. The community involvement has been a significant factor in our success for getting this project to the approval stage.
Planning for the design of our new school in Irma will begin as soon as possible. We will be seeking input from the school staff and students as well as the community in the design of our new school. At the same time, the Irma School and District Enhancement Society is working to formalize their commitment to enhance the project to maximize the use of the school by the community.
The preliminary plans include project tendering in November/December of this year, with a building projected start date in April 2018 and the school opening at the start of September 2019.
